Dr Colville Laird – Medical Director

As well as being involved with BASICS Scotland since 1993, Colville was a GP in Auchterarder for 32 years during which he was actively involved in immediate care. He is immediate past Chair of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, medical adviser to the Sandpiper Trust and was previously an Associate Editor of the Emergency Medicine Journal. He is an honorary professor at the University of Central Lancashire.

Dr Richard Price – Assistant Clinical Director

Richard is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley and with the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. He teaches on several BASICS courses and leads the Clinical Governance working group. Richard officially took up his role as Assistant Clinical Director in October 2016.

Dr Ben Price – Assistant Clinical Director

Ben is a GP in Perthshire having previously worked in remote and rural general practice in Speyside and NHS Highland. He has particular interests in promoting rural GP and the role of the generalist as well as pre-hospital urgent and emergency care. He is a BASICS responder and regularly teaches with BASICS Scotland on adult and paediatric courses. When not working he is usually to be found enjoying the outdoors; running, cycling or just exploring and seeing his family grow up. Ben officially took up his role as Assistant Clinical Director in October 2016.

Graeme Ramage – Sandpiper Fellow

Graeme joined BASICS Scotland in April 2012 in the new post of Sandpiper Fellow to direct courses. He is also involved in expanding BASICS Scotland’s portfolio of courses through the development of new educational and training initiatives. Graeme can be contacted at

Al McLean – Clinical Lead

Al joined us from the Scottish Ambulance Service and prior to that he served for 23+ years as a Military Paramedic. Al works to develop new educational material for remote and rural practitioners. This includes exciting new opportunities to use emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR). Al can be contacted at

Lynne Malpass – Office Manager

Lynne has been with BASICS Scotland since September 2007 and her main role is managing all aspects of the administration, staff and finances as well as dealing with all Board communications. You can contact Lynne at

Colin Young – Van Driver/Store-person

Colin has been with us since February 2008 and has responsibility for ensuring our van and trailer are ‘on the road’, as well as organising all the equipment before and after each course. Colin can be contacted at

Craig Stewart – IT Facilitator/Administrator

Craig joined the team at BASICS Scotland in November 2012 and his duties include maintenance and development of website/e-learning; filming, editing and production of videos for training purposes; provide general I.T. support within the organisation.  Craig can be contacted at

Blair Fleming – 1st Line I.T. Support/Administrator

Blair joined the team in November 2016 and his duties include working with Craig assisting with I.T. support; website administration and maintenance; managing of Tele-education and Remote Skills courses. Lorna Foucré – Administrator

Lorna joined the team in March 2017. Her role includes the organisation of the annual conference, administration support to Lynne and Colville, administration of the accounts, regional reps and supporting BASICS Responders.
