A team of BASICS Scotland instructors responded to a major incident at the Lecht Ski Centre on the afternoon of Feb 12th when a chairlift derailed injuring 6 people and leaving almost 40 others stranded. Dr Tom Heneghan from Dufftown was one of the first on scene, followed by his GP partner Dr Ben Price. Dr Mike Langran from Aviemore was called to act as the MIO for the incident. Just by chance, there were several other senior doctors skiing at the centre at the time including Drs Campbell and Thompson from the EMRS, Julie Mardon an Emergency Medicine consultant from Ayrshire and Mr Patel – paediatric surgeon from Aberdeen! On scene treatments were administered using several Sandpiper Bags. Three casualties were flown to hospital, one to Inverness by Helimed 2 and 2 to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by Rescue 177. The remaining casualties were taken to ARI by road ambulance. Thankfully none have sustained serious injuries.
